STEM
   MURAL

Inspire

Imagine a mural that promotes education, diversity, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).  With careful consideration, a group of nine, diverse people influential in STEM were chosen. Through their lives and achievements we can learn the importance of education as a means of success and passion as a lifestyle.
Why a mural? Art and science are more closely connected than many realize. Just as an artist sees the contour, shading and depth in a human hand, the scientist and engineer see its pulse, organ systems, and dexterity. Both subjects are deeply intertwined through this fascination for the world around them and the possibilities of their field. The mural seeks to connect both of these aspects of knowledge. It does this through its artistic components, as well as the historically significant persons, the spiral galaxy as a natural fractal, Pythagoras' spiral, and the golden ratio. To see this in full visit the "About" page for the photo gallery.

What is STEM?

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  It is a teaching curriculum that encourages critical thinking, problem solving, gathering and evaluating information, and understanding that information.

Women in STEM

12% decrease of women receiving  computer science degrees since 1991 -National Science Foundation

In a survey of 11,500 girls between the ages 11-20 it was concluded that the age of 15 is when a girl's interest in STEM drops and that it is less likely to regain momentum again after that point.-Microsoft Study

Minorities in STEM

African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians and Alaska Natives accounted for 10 percent of the country’s workers in science and engineering in 2010- National Science Board
The STEM workforce is no more diverse than it was 16 years ago- Change the Equation Data

The
Gold
Award

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement a girl can earn. It was created in 1916 and has continued to define girls as world changers ever since. It is open to high school Girl Scouts in the United States. Recipients are treated with esteem and often go on to receive college scholarships,  join the military at one rank higher, and have higher success rates in life compared to their peers.
